Hand Drawn Pixel Painting:A Moment of Static

Hand Drawn Pixel Painting: A Moment of Static is a set of two light cubes that explore the introduction of the human hand in pixel based image creation and the moment of visual static that occurs when pixels find themselves in chaos.The light shines through the coloured grid not only animating the grid but also casting a myriad of colour upon the adjacent surfaces (as well as the viewer themselves.)

WE ARE ALL ILLUMINATED

Before beginning each painting I created a meditative atmosphere in which to work, understanding that for this work I was aiming to set out on a sort of journey, uncertain of where the tide would take me. A meditative space is taken into consideration in both the making and viewing of the work. The viewer stands in front of the cubes as if in front of a church window creating a moment of reflection and calm. Hand Drawn Pixel Painting: A moment of Static does not however pay homage to any particular god but rather to a moment.

PERSONAL PRONOUNS: A WHISPER NETWORK APRIL 2011

Personal Pronouns: A Whisper Network is a performance incorporating personal storytelling, broken telephone, word of mouth information sharing and intimacy boundaries with strangers. The work explores the possibility for freak editing of narratives as they traverse through embodied social network structures.
The viewers are invited to be seated and together with the performer they become active nodes within the Whisper Network. Towards the front of the room an overhead projector illuminates a copy of an email written to me several years ago by a former lover. The contents of the correspondence have been almost completely blocked out with fuschia rectangles over each word excluding all the personal pronouns. Nothing is left but you, me, us and we. The only means of understanding the story is to listen closely.
The performer whispers a message to the person seated next to her, enticing them to pass along her story in a whisper. She recites the email in full, line for line.The story is passed throughout the nodes creating a chorus of whispers that hum and hiss in the darkness. The content of the email itself and the physicality and intimacy of how the story is shared within the Whisper Network put into question our own personal boundaries around physical space as well as our relationships with sharing personal information face to face as opposed to on the Internet, specifically on social networking sites. The network will cease to be active once the story is complete and becomes dormant until the nodes gather once more to exchange a story in whispers.

Enter OCAD presents the thesis work of the class of 2010, an eclectic mix of more than 500 graduating students working in twelve undergraduate programs ranging from drawing and painting, printmaking, photography, criticism and curatorial practice, integrated media and sculpture/installation in the Faculty of Art, to advertising, environmental, industrial and graphic design, illustration and material art and design (jewellery, fibre and ceramics) in the university’s Faculty of Design. Enter OCAD will transform the university’s main building and the acclaimed Sharp Centre for Design into the biggest exhibition of the year.

I moved to Paris on a whim almost two years ago to work as a private cook for a wealthy family. I knew no one and had no real idea of what would come. With a cheap super 8mm camera i wandered the streets and filmed strangers, partially for something to do.I was lonely and having a camera invites people talk to you if you don't look too intimidating, and partially because being in Paris and knowing no one somehow gives you license to change yourself (wear high heels everywhere, or not, wear too much makeup, dress up, play a part) and follow anyone (you probably won't have a friend in common i thought). surprisingly that isn't always true.
